Windbreaker

The wind swept coast of Kilcunda is notorious for stormy winter conditions; but in the height of summer, the area often enjoys beautiful clear days with light winds. Our Wind Breaker home had to accommodate year-round weather conditions.

Perched on the hill at the back of Kilcunda, the house has direct views through the lower valley to the breaking surf. The ‘reverse living’ design sees bedrooms on the ground floor and the main area of the home located up on the first floor, with each room looking southeast towards the ocean views. The south and western side of the building shields itself from the weather through screen walls and vegetation. Towards the north, the building opens up with larger glazing to maximise natural light. Materials had to be carefully selected for this site. Rather than using natural stained material, we opted for paint-finished products to better protect the cladding from the harsh western conditions.

The outdoor area is zoned for multiple purposes. The northern courtyard is a light-filled space with direct access to the front bedrooms. Behind the garage we have a service zone for boat storage, surfboard racks, outdoor shower − everything you need for the quintessential coastal lifestyle. Further back, where more sun can penetrate, the spa and decking area create the ultimate relaxation zone.

The upper-storey balcony is built for entertainment. Directly connected to the living area, this space is perfect for summer BBQs while watching the surf. Wind Breaker is a true coastal retreat that pays homage to the occasionally wild, always breathtaking ocean beyond.
